Vacation time is not just a time dedicated for your employees to relax and unwind, it is also important for you as the owner of the business to relax and forget about work – even if only for a short time.

As an owner, it can be stressful to be away from the business you have worked so hard to build. There are ways you can ease these feelings and help ensure your company runs smoothly when you are gone.

1. Start planning in advance.

As an owner, it’s not a good idea for you to just hop onto a plane without any prior notice. There are many demands on your time from both your employees and your clients and you need to be sure they are taken care of while you are away. Schedule your vacation well in advance and inform all of your clients and employees that you are taking some much needed time off. By knowing when you will be gone, meetings can be scheduled around your trip so you don’t miss anything important and clients will be understanding and patient while you are gone.

2. Put someone in charge.

Someone needs to take charge and handle anything unexpected while you are gone. If someone in your organization is experienced enough to be your substitute, give them the power to take care of the business while you are away. At the very minimum clients and employees need a point of contact to get messages to you while you are gone.

3. Schedule all marketing before you leave.

It is never wise to release a big marketing promotion while you are away. Schedule all your marketing around your trip so nothing out of the ordinary comes up while you are gone and possibly even unreachable. Thankfully, much of your social media marketing can easily be scheduled in advance so your company doesn’t go silent while you enjoy your trip.

4. Tie up all loose ends.

Even in the best plans something almost always falls through the cracks or unexpectedly comes up. Work through these carefully and try and close out all of your existing deals before you go out of town. This will help things to run smoothly in your absence and allow you to start fresh when you return.

5. Relax. Business will continue.

This may be the toughest part of this list as many business owners find it difficult to relax when they away and spend most of their time wondering about how things are going at the office, especially in this globally connected era. Try and take the time you need to relax and actually forget about your business. Remember, your employees can handle the place while you are away. Trust that they will do their best and take care of everything while you are gone so you can unwind even if it is only for a short time.

With just a little simply planning, you can ensure that your time away will be relaxing and enjoyable for you so you can recharge your batteries and be ready for a strong return. Remember, even if you are the owner of your business, you still need time to devote to yourself in order to be able to give your company the very best you have to offer. So take a vacation, you’ve earned it and trust your employees to take care of it while you are away.
